I am Dave Schultz and for forty years I’ve been finding ways to repurposes waste from viticulture, enology, bottles, corks and other items associated with making and drinking wine. I truly believe that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
From the consumption of my very first bottle of fine wine, I admired the beauty of the label, cork, glass, even the foil…and of course, the wine itself. The art associated with a bottle of wine goes well beyond its contents. I think back to the mid-1970’s when I ran a fine wine shop in California and I was awaiting the next release of Chateau Mouton Rothschild so I might see the wonderful art used that year on their labels (see: https://www.chateau-mouton-rothschild.com/label-art/discover-the-artwork). It was my early collection of wine labels that lead me to see that such discarded items could be brought back to life as works of art to adorn any wine lover’s home or office.
I moved to the Napa Valley in 1969, graduated from Napa High School and married my high school sweetheart (whose father worked in the wine industry for most of his career). I went off to college in San Diego and started a career in Energy. For nearly 40 years, I appropriately took advantage of my expense account to enjoy fine wine and to entertain customers in the Napa Valley whenever possible.
On one of my trips to Napa, I was able to salvage a riddling rack, which I shipped home and converted into a coffee table (which I still use today). That was one of my first creations. Since acquiring the riddling rack, I have collected thousands of corks, a lot of barrels, vine cuttings and numerous other related items…converting them into some other form.
As you wander through the gallery of items that I have created, I hope you find something of interest! As you will see, my work is not the cookie cutter barrel stave candle votive variety, but one of a kind pieces created with a vision in mind, hopefully yours, and my touch to bring it to fruition.
I work solely on a commission-basis and I want to bring something truly unique and out of the ordinary to your home or office.
